Drag Race Franchise

Drag Race is een reality-tv wedstrijd voor dragqueens op televisie, gecreëerd door het Amerikaanse dragicoon RuPaul en het productiebedrijf World of Wonder. Het is ontstaan in de Verenigde Staten in 2009, waar het werd bedacht als vervanging voor Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World (2007-2009), en is in verschillende landen geadapteerd. Het doel van de show is om de volgende "Drag Superstar" te vinden, waarbij de winnaars de eigenschappen "charisma", "uniqueness", "nerve" en "talent" uitstralen. RuPaul vertelde dat de show op zoek is naar een entertainer die zich kan onderscheiden van de rest.^[1] RuPaul's Drag Race wordt geloven voor het "mainstream" maken van drag en queer-cultuur.^[2]

RuPaul's Drag Race heeft anno 2022 veertien seizoenen geproduceerd en heeft verschillende spin-offs gecreeërd, waaronder RuPaul's Drag U, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, en RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race. Daarnaast zijn er óók drie 'DragCons' georganiseerd: RuPaul's DragCon LA, RuPaul's DragCon NYC, en RuPaul's DragCon UK. Een RuPaul's Drag Race Live! variétéprogramma in Las Vegas is in 2020 opgericht met een bijbehoordende tv special.
