Drag Race Germany[1] was first teased on August 8, 2022 when World of Wonder published a casting call for German drag artists via social media accounts.[4]

On December 12, 2022, the series was confirmed, along with the announcement that it would air on Paramount+ in Germany.[3] The series is also exclusively available in the streaming service in Austria and Switzerland.[5]

The series official title and logo were unveiled on August 1, 2023, along with a premiere date of September 5.[1]

On August 10, 2023, Barbie Breakout and Gianni Jovanovic were announced as the series' co-hosts.[6][7] Dianne Brill was revealed as a judge the following day.[8]

On January 31, 2024, the series was removed from Paramount Plus, along with other international series, in a global move from the network to reduce international originals, manage costs, and focus on big U.S. studio productions.[9]

Before being announced by World of Wonder in 2022, the show had been in production as early as 2013, with Munich-based production company Phantomfilm announcing that they had licensing rights in Germany to produce a Drag Race franchise in the country, and that the show was already in the works.[10] Filming was expected to commence in that same year in Munich,[11] and several auditions are still available on the company's YouTube channel. The winner would have received a monetary amount in euros, as well as a role in an undisclosed musical.[12]

As revealed by Taç Romey, the spokesperson for Phantomfilm at the time, there would be little changes to the format, other than it having greater focus on comedy to adapt to the country's market, and that the show was going to air on a mainstream network, although the company was still negotiating with various channels.[11] The host was also still not decided, and the title of the show was going to be RuPaul's Drag Race Germany.[12] Ultimately, the company's licensing rights expired, which led to a second attempt of producing Drag Race in Germany.

In 2019, the contestants from the first season of Queen of Drags were told that they would be competing on a German franchise of Drag Race. However, after the cast had met for the first time, they were told that the show's production company failed to get licensing rights for Drag Race, and therefore would have a different format.[13]
