Juan Carmona Gámez,[1] known professionally as Johnny Carmona, is a Mexican TV and Internet personality, university professor and an activist for LGBTQ+ rights. He is also known for being a regular judge on the first three seasons of the YouTube show La Más Draga. He subsequently returned solely as a coach since the fourth season.
Biography[]
Johnny Carmona was born in Ciudad Satélite, State of México. Johnny, himself, has revealed that he was raised by strict parents, but claims to have had a happy childhood. Like millions of children around the world, he grew up watching Disney animated movies. However, for Johnny, the characters of this fantastic universe impacted him in a deeper way, with his Disney-fascination being tangible just by looking at him. In addition to wearing bright colors, and often dyeing his facial hair to match, Johnny has around 148 tattoos covering his body, the vast majority of which are Disney characters and motifs. He received his first tattoo in 2003.
Johnny studied marketing at UNITEC, and, since 2002, has taught communications and marketing at the University of Communication, where he is also part of the coordination team of UC Radio, the campus’s web radio station. Before rising to fame, he also worked at an artist consulting agency. In addition to the University of Communication, Johnny has also taught at the University of the Valley of México and the University of London.
Johnny is openly gay. He eventually started his own YouTube channel, in 2007, under the name Johnny Bradshaw. Johnny was one of the early internet LGBT+ influencers from México, paving the way for others in the world of virtual platforms. From that moment, Johnny became a familiar figure in the Latino and greater LGBT+ community, but without neglecting his great passion — teaching.
In 2014, Johnny began collaborating with the virtual platform Servicio de Agencia. Here, he had his own space, Por El Camino, which presented diverse content focused on the LGBT+ community, as well as reports and interviews on key figures inside and allies outside the community.
Between 2016 and 2018, Johnny was one of the managers of the Ramona restaurant, located in Colonia Juárez in the Mexican capital. The restaurant, a project carried-out together with his husband (visual communicator Carlos Cabrera), was named in the memory of a dog that accompanied Johnny for a part of his life. Carlos and Johnny have been married since 2012.[6]
