Soju (KO: 소주)[1] is a former Korean American drag performer, content creator and one of the Season 11 contestants of RuPaul's Drag Race.

On January 21, 2021, Soju was accused of sexual assault by multiple men. Soju came forward with a statement admitting to the accusations. Since the incident, she has deleted her Twitter account.[3][4]

On March 9th, 2021, Soju publicly announced that she had quit drag for her mental health.[5]

Drag Name Origin[]

College was a very significant time for Soju because it was when she came out to her parents, lost her virginity, and had her first alcoholic drink. The name "Soju" comes from the Korean liquor which she drank all throughout college. Soju felt that this was a very fitting name for her new career in the drag world since it represents the time when she began accepting and loving who she truly was.[6]

Controversies[]

On January 21, 2021, multiple Twitter users came forward with allegations of sexual assault against Soju. The first victim, going by the name of "Kev", said that beginning in January 2016, he was "sexually assaulted, manipulated, and gaslit by Soju several times." Instances included being blackout drunk and not able to consent but having sexual relations with Soju, and, in January 2018, being physically forced to perform oral sex on Soju and not being brought home until he complied with Soju's demands. Another person alleged that while in a monogamous relationship Soju invited him over, gave him wine, and, the next morning, took pictures of them naked and asleep, and after going back to sleep they woke up to Soju's hand feeling their naked body. When the person rejected, Soju allegedly asked why they came over. The same person said that another time Soju asked them to help her pack up before moving and once again got them drunk and tried to make moves without consent.[8]

After the allegations came out, Soju put out a statement on Instagram, saying “At the time, I was promiscuous and led a stereotypically ‘f**k boy’ life,” Soju explained. “That being said, I never once in my life did anything without the other person’s consent. Consent matters. No matter how much I wanted to have sex with someone, I never proceeded without the partner’s permission. And never once did I take advantage of someone when they were too drunk to make decisions or blacked out. My way of life could’ve made people feel like all they were good for in my life was the sex. But I never let my way of life intentionally hurt people... I’ve always been transparent and honest with you guys and I will never stop...I’m sorry to everyone who feel disappointed by me. I’m sorry to anyone that I hurt in any way, shape, or form. Thank you for your understanding and your patience.” In an official statement to Out Magazine, Soju said that "While I await full advice from my legal representative to make an official statement, I will share that I have anticipated these claims after threats and an extortion attempt were sent to me as recently as January 2020. These claims were first brought to my attention by a contact asking for a large sum of money, threats that they would make my life difficult if I did not pay, as well as full admission their lawyer saw this 'case' as an opportunity to spread her name. I have photographic proof of these attempts, among other evidence to point these claims have been orchestrated towards me, and I will share when my full case is prepared."[9][4]

On March 9, 2021, after a hiatus from Instagram and having deleted her twitter, Soju posted a statement on her Instagram, saying "Thank you all for the messages, just a quick update to the people that are concerned about me, I have been diagnosed and am getting professional help. Please don't worry. TBH IDK if I'm doing the right thing, but for my mental health I won't be returning as Soju. I'm taking it day by day. Again, ur messages have saved me from many dark nights. So again, thank you."[5]
