The first season of Canada's Drag Race was officially announced via World of Wonder's Instagram on June 27, 2019[1]. The show aired on CraveCanada, OutTV, and select territories on WOW Presents Plus.
On September 26, 2019 the judges of the show were revealed via social media; they include RuPaul's Drag Race alum Brooke Lynn Hytes, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, and Stacey McKenzie with Traci Melchor acting as a "squirrel friend."[2]
This season features contestants competing for the title of "Canada’s First Drag Superstar", a cash prize of $100,000 CAD (≈ $76,110 USD), a crown and sceptre from Amped Accessories and a year's worth of holiday stays with Hilton. The winner of this season was Priyanka.
On August 24, 2021, an anniversary special was announced, where all 12 queens will return to look back at memorable moments from the season. The special will also include exclusive interviews with the Season 2 judges. Hosted by Season 1 winner Priyanka, the special is available in English and French and premiered Monday, Sept. 6 at 9 p.m. ET.[3]
About The Show
Following 12 Canadian drag artists as they compete for the title of “Canada’s Next Drag Superstar.” Each episode tests their talents and challenges them to master singing, dancing, acting, impersonation, costume making, and improvisation. Judging the series are a panel of entertainment industry experts, including Brooke Lynn Hytes, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, and Stacey McKenzie, along with a weekly celebrity guest. One competitor is eliminated at the end of each episode, until one Queen is left standing with the crown, scepter, and title. Throughout this journey, the Queens share their personal struggles, successes, and show the importance of celebrating everyone’s charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent.
