Lucinda Miu is a Canadian drag queen and a salon member on Call Me Mother.

Drag Name Origin[]

"When it came time to figuring out my drag name, I went back into the plays I wrote in high school. The name Lucinda kept coming up again and again as periphery characters until she made her debut in a grade 12 drama night scene. I needed a spooky counterpart to my aptly named Damien, and Lucinda was the closest I could get to Lucifer without being obvious. I am, before everything else, a scream queen."[4]

Biography[]

Silver screen star, scream queen, and fever dream: Lucinda Miu is a drag queen, burlesque performer, and costume designer bewitched by horror movies, theatrical magic, and all things vintage. A first generation Canadian performer, Lucinda inherited her poise from her Peruvian mama and her fire from her El Salvadoran father. Her performances combine her love of clever costuming with effective storytelling to dazzle audiences all across the city. While predominantly active in Toronto's alternative West End, Lucinda's also active within the burlesque community, where she's known for her campy, ultra-feminine aesthetic and innovative costume reveal after costume reveal after costume reveal. She appeared in the 2019 Toronto Burlesque Festival with her Marie Antoinette inspired act, and will be appearing virtually in the 2020 Toronto Burlesque Festival with an angelic burlesque complete with wings, clouds, and flirtation.

Lucinda Miu is the drag mother and founding member of Toronto's infamous vaudevillian drag troupe, The Diet Ghosts. They are known for creating immersive, theatrical parties that culminate with a two act lip-synced drag spectacular. These shows include a fully decorated set, costumes, puppets, projections, magic, choreography, and lots and lots of stupidity. Think children's theatre for drunk adults. The group has a residency at The Beaver where they mount new productions every fourth Friday of the month. They also perform regularly at The Gladstone Hotel and have performed in such venues as Rebel Nightclub for Tourism Toronto, Oasis Aqualounge where they hosted a murder mystery, Absinthe Hamilton, and the Fido South Stage where they headlined and hosted Alternaqueer for Pride 2019. Because of their commitment to Toronto's west end drag scene, they've been lauded as the Doyennes of Toronto's Drag Scene.

Lucinda also works regularly with Toronto Drag Queen Storytime, a Toronto-based initiative that brings drag queens in full costume and makeup together with local children and families to share in an hour of storytelling, dress-up, and fun. Lucinda has read and performed in countless libraries and schools across Toronto as well as in the Durham region. Her involvement with the library system led to her leading the Toronto Public Library in the 2019 Toronto Pride Parade where she playfully shushed rowdy parade-goers. She was also hired to give a talk to library educators about the power and importance of a program like Drag Storytime.

Aside from lip-syncing and costume design, Lucinda is also incredibly passionate about theatre and acting. She starred in a few self produced independent productions such as Don't Splash Shelley Rae where she played a bilingual mermaid and Lil' Miss Whereyafrom, a beauty pageant that examined the cultural disconnect for a first generation Canadian who's never been to their parent's country of origin. Most recently, she played Minnie Tittie on CBC Gem's newest queer whodunnit series, Queens. Her costume work can also be seen on a few contestants in the first season of Canada's Drag Race.[3]
