Mathu Andersen is a freelance makeup artist known for his work as a consultant and producer for RuPaul's Drag Race, as well as his work on This Is It (2009) and The RuPaul Show (1996). He was RuPaul's longtime creative collaborator and makeup artist.
Mathu Andersen is Australian born, with a background in fashion and textile design. Mathu moved to New York in 1986 and subsequently formed a partnership with Zaldy Goco as a NYC nightlife fixture during the 90’s. Mathu has worked with photographers including Francesco Scavullo, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Arthur Elgort, Annie Liebovitz, Deborah Turbeville, Ellen von Unwerth, Ruven Afanodor, Guzman, and Joseph Astor. His work has been seen in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Face, ID, Glamour, Allure, Cosmopolitan and more. His clients have included the top names in beauty and fashion such as Dolce & Gahanna, Louis Vuitton, Covergirl, Lancome, Donna Karan, Shiseido, Thierry Mugler and Barneys New York.
In 2002, Mathu moved to Los Angeles where, in addition to continuing his fashion and artistic work, he has worked on music videos with artists like Janet Jackson, TLC, No Doubt, Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez, Garbage, Christina Aguilera, Nicole Scherzinger, Lisa Marie Presley, and Nicole Richie. Mathu worked several seasons of America’s Next Top Model, and was known for his work on RuPaul’s Drag Race. He was the creative producer and managed RuPaul’s image for the show. Although Mathu has worked extensively in the world of make up, he has also taken the past couple of years to put more energy towards his work in photography and graphic design. His work with World of Wonder Productions has also allowed him to expand into other areas like writing, producing, film editing and generally being a part of pop culture in an interesting way.
