The thirteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was officially announced on August 20, 2020. Filming began on July 20, 2020 with production officially ending on August 31, when the contestants resumed social media activity.

On Tuesday, December 8, 2020, the first promo for Season 13 was accidentally leaked on the official YouTube channel revealing the season would premiere on Friday, January 1, 2021 and revealing several queens.

On December 9, 2020 (the birthday of the reigning queen, Jaida Essence Hall), the cast was officially announced on X and promos were released. The promo theme for the season was "Pasteloquence", featuring the queens in a pin-up silhouette modified for their drag style in pastel colors.

On February 26, 2021, VH1 aired a documentary entitled "RuPaul's Drag Race: Corona Can't Keep A Good Drag Queen Down" which revealed how Season 13 was filmed during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary featured the queens' experiences, never-before-seen footage and casting reels, and how they managed to produce it safely during the pandemic. The documentary aired in place of Episode 9 that was originally set to air that date, with the Snatch Game episode airing on March 5, 2021 instead.

The final episode was in part dedicated to Chi Chi DeVayne, who passed away in August 2020.

The winner of the thirteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was Symone, with Kandy Muse placing as the runner-up and LaLa Ri winning Miss Congeniality.

About The Show

    • ... where every queen lip synced at least twice.

  • Season 13 is the fourth season to have a double shantay between the winner and a runner-up, after Sharon Needles and Phi Phi O'Hara on Season 4, Yvie Oddly and Brooke Lynn Hytes on Season 11, and Angele Anang and Kana Warrior on Drag Race Thailand (Season 2).
  • On Episode 1, it was revealed that Tamisha Iman was originally cast on Season 12 but had to forego the season due to her cancer diagnosis.
    • It was later confirmed that she was replaced by Nicky Doll, who coincidentally, was also the 3rd contestant in her season to be sent home.
  • Several Season 13 contestants are drag related to Drag Race alumni:
  • Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman of Canada's Drag Race made a cameo in episode 4, twice as a prince and once as a Prince impersonator in the three acting challenges.
  • At the start of episode 4, the mirror reads "Bye Don", in reference to Donald Trump's term ending 2 days before the episode aired.
  • Because of the Episode 1 Lip Sync Extravaganza, the following split premieres and a rather early double shantay, Season 13 is the Drag Race season where the episode with the same amount of competing contestants as there are episodes happens the latest, with a top nine in Episode 9. The previous record was held by Seasons 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12, with a top eight competing in Episode 8.

  • The lip sync assassins of the season statistically were Kandy Muse and Symone. Kandy beat Joey Jay, sent home Tamisha Iman, Olivia Lux, and Rosé, and tied with Symone. Symone beat Tamisha and Olivia, sent home Utica Queen and Gottmik, and both tied with and later sent home Kandy.
    • At the reunion episode, RuPaul officially named Denali and LaLa Ri the lip sync assassins of the season out of the eliminated queens. Denali beat Rosé and sent home Kahmora Hall, while LaLa beat Denali and sent home Joey Jay. Denali's "100% Pure Love" lip sync and LaLa's "Fancy" lip sync were also highly praised by the judges, queens, and fans alike.
  • Season 13 has the most non-elimination episodes, with 5. The first episode split the queens into two groups, the second and third episode had top two lip sync for the wins, the eighth episode had a double shantay, and the fourteenth episode had the final four all move on to the finale.
  • Season 13 has the most amount of competitive lip syncs in a single season in herstory, with 22 performances. This does not count other performances such as the reunion lip syncs, as they were not competitive.
