The thirteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was officially announced on August 20, 2020. Filming began on July 20, 2020 with production officially ending on August 31, when the contestants resumed social media activity.

On Tuesday, December 8, 2020, the first promo for Season 13 was accidentally leaked on the official YouTube channel revealing the season would premiere on Friday, January 1, 2021 and revealing several queens.

On December 9, 2020 (the birthday of the reigning queen, Jaida Essence Hall), the cast was officially announced on Twitter and promos were released. The promo theme for the season was "Pasteloquence", featuring the queens in a pin-up silhouette modified for their drag style in pastel colors.

On February 26, 2021, VH1 aired a documentary entitled "RuPaul's Drag Race: Corona Can't Keep A Good Drag Queen Down" which revealed how Season 13 was filmed during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary featured the queens' experiences, never-before-seen footage and casting reels, and how they managed to produce it safely during the pandemic. The documentary aired in place of Episode 9 that was originally set to air that date, with the Snatch Game episode airing on March 5, 2021 instead.

The final episode was in part dedicated to Chi Chi DeVayne, who passed away in August 2020.

The Winner of Season 13 was Symone, with Kandy Muse placing as Runner-Up and Rosé and Gottmik placing as 3rd/4th Place. The Winner of the Miss Congeniality title was LaLa Ri.

    • ... to have four non-elimination episodes, namely the Lip-sync showdown, the split premieres and the Rusical.
    • ... to have three contestants get the same placement in four consecutive episodes. Denali, Gottmik and Rosé were all safe and sent to Untucked right away in Episodes 6 and 7, and were all in the top in Episodes 8 and 9.
    • ... to not have the winner of the second premiere (Denali) as the winner of the season, unlike Bianca Del Rio and Jaida Essence Hall.
    • ... to have a contestant land in the bottom two in 2 consecutive weeks happen the latest, at Episode 11 & 12.
      • Additionally, this was the only time a contestant landed in the bottom 2 two weeks-in-a-row.
    • ... to feature a Ball in the final episode.
    • ... where every queen lip synced at least twice.
      • This is because of the lipsync smackdown in the premiere, along with the fact that the two queens who never landed in the bottom two (Gottmik and Rosé) participated in both the final 4 lip sync in episode 14 and the lip sync for the crown in the finale.

  • Season 13 is the second season...
    • ... to have contestants leaked by Drag Race, the first being Season 2 of Drag Race UK.

    • ... in which both the winner Symone and Miss Congeniality LaLa Ri are black, after Season 12, that had Jaida Essence Hall as the winner and Heidi N Closet as Miss Congeniality.

  • Season 13 is the third season...

  • Season 13 is the fourth season to have a double shantay between the winner and runner-up, after Sharon Needles and Phi Phi O'Hara on Season 4, Yvie Oddly and Brooke Lynn Hytes on Season 11, and Angele Anang and Kana Warrior on Drag Race Thailand (Season 2).
  • On Episode 1, it was revealed that Tamisha Iman was originally cast on Season 12 but had to forego the season due to her cancer diagnosis.
    • It was later confirmed that she was replaced by Nicky Doll, who coincidentally, was also the 3rd contestant in her season to be sent home.
  • Several Season 13 contestants are drag related to Drag Race alumni:
  • Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman of Canada's Drag Race made a cameo in episode 4, twice as a prince and once as a Prince impersonator in the three acting challenges.
  • At the start of episode 4, the mirror reads "Bye Don", in reference to Donald Trump's term ending 2 days before the episode aired.
  • Because of the Episode 1 Lip Sync Extravaganza, the following split premieres and a rather early double shantay, Season 13 is the Drag Race season where the episode with the same amount of competing contestants as there are episodes happens the latest, with a top nine in Episode 9. The previous record was held by Seasons 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12, with a top eight competing in Episode 8.
    • The only other season where an amount of competing contestants matches the episode's number was Season 1, with the top five competing in Episode 5.
  • Part of the fifth episode (the Mini Challenge segment) was filmed on July 30, 2020, on Elliott's birthday. [2]
  • As revealed in the mid-season special episode, "Corona Can't Keep a Good Queen Down" ...
    • ... filming began on July 20th, 2020.
    • ... 2,591 Covid tests were administered.
  • Porkchop "winning" the Snatch Game was based off of a running joke about Raven placing as a Runner-Up in Season 2 and All Stars 1.
  • Season 13 has the most amount of queens who did not play women in Snatch Game, with four. Kandy Muse, Tina Burner, and Utica Queen played Patrick Starrr, Richard Simmons, and Bob Ross, respectively, who are men, and Denali played Jonathan Van Ness, who is non-binary.
  • It was revealed by Alaska that the runway theme "Fascinating Fascinators" was originally planned for All Stars 2, however the runway didn't end up happening until 5 years later for the Snatch Game episode on this season.[3]
  • When the episode premiered on Netflix UK, Episode 11 had a title error, where the episode was titled "Goes the Queens" instead of "Pop! Goes the Queens". This has now been corrected.
  • The lip sync assassins of the season statistically were Kandy Muse and Symone. Kandy beat Joey Jay, sent home Tamisha Iman, Olivia Lux, and Rosé, and tied with Symone. Symone beat Tamisha and Olivia, sent home Utica Queen and Gottmik, and both tied with and later sent home Kandy.
    • At the reunion episode, RuPaul officially named Denali and LaLa Ri the lip sync assassins of the season out of the eliminated queens. Denali beat Rosé and sent home Kahmora Hall, while LaLa beat Denali and sent home Joey Jay. Denali's "100% Pure Love" lip sync and LaLa's "Fancy" lip sync were also highly praised by the judges, queens, and fans alike.
  • Season 13 has the most non-elimination episodes, with 5. The first episode split the queens into two groups, the second and third episode had top two lip sync for the wins, the eighth episode had a double shantay, and the fourteenth episode had the final four all move on to the finale.
  • Season 13 has the most amount of competitive lip syncs in a single season in herstory, with 22 performances. This does not count other performances such as the reunion lip syncs, as they were not competitive.
    • Although it has the most lip syncs, only one pair of queens lip synced against each other twice, those queens being Symone and Kandy Muse.
  • Rosé allegedly fainted before the "Work Bitch" lip sync at the finale, but it went unaired.[4]
  • Season 13 is the longest season of Drag Race, not including international franchises, with 16 episodes and 1 special episode.
