The thirteenth season of RuPaul's Drag Race was officially announced on August 20, 2020. Filming began on July 20, 2020 with production officially ending on August 31, when the contestants resumed social media activity.
On Tuesday, December 8, 2020, the first promo for Season 13 was accidentally leaked on the official YouTube channel revealing the season would premiere on Friday, January 1, 2021 and revealing several queens.
On December 9, 2020, (The birthday of the reigning queen) the cast was officially announced on Twitter and promos were released. The promo theme for the season was "Pasteloquence", featuring the queens in a pin-up silhouette modified for their drag style in pastel colors.
It was also announced that VH1 and World of Wonder would release a documentary entitled "RuPaul's Drag Race: Corona Can't Keep A Good Drag Queen Down" which revealed how Season 13 was filmed during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary featured the queens' experiences, never-before-seen footage and casting reels and more importantly how they managed to produce it safely during the pandemic. It aired on February 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on VH1, and it replaced an episode that was originally set to air for that date, with it airing on March 5 instead.

Trivia
- Season 13 is the first season...
- ... where the trailer was leaked by the Drag Race YouTube channel.
- ... to begin the season with a lip sync showdown, a challenge usually done at the finale.
- ... to have the same amount of contestants as there are regular seasons (13 seasons, 13 contestants).
- ... to feature a transgender man, Gottmik.
- ... to feature a vote-off (normally featured exclusively on RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars) in a regular season.
- ... to feature a contestant from Alaska, Denali, who is originally from Fairbanks, Alaska.
- ... to feature a contestant from Arkansas, Symone, who is originally from Conway, Arkansas.
- Because of this and Denali's being from Alaska, all four states starting in A have now featured at least one queen on Drag Race.
- ... to feature a drag mother and daughter competing against one another on the same season, Tamisha Iman and LaLa Ri.
- Coincidentally, they both went home back to back.
- ... to have each contestant get an individual commercial to count down to the premiere.
- ... to feature the contestants in only a single look during the premiere.
- ... to feature RuPaul in drag throughout an entire episode, in the premiere.
- ... to have a contestant win the first two Maxi Challenges she competed in on a non-All Stars season, Symone.
- ... to have a contestant win a Maxi Challenge in her first competitive episode and land in the bottom two in the next, Denali.
- ... to have no elimination in three consecutive episodes.
- ... to not have a contestant land in the bottom two twice by the 6th episode.
- ... to have a contestant compete with an ostomy bag, Tamisha Iman.
- ... to feature the previous season's queens giving a message to their same placement queens in Season 13.
- ... to feature a queen who was asked to sashay away, but then have RuPaul change her mind and allow them to stay in the competition.
- ... to have four non-elimination episodes, namely the Lip-sync showdown, the split premieres and the Rusical.
- ... to have a non competitive episode replace a regular episode.
- Season 13 is the second season...
- ... to have contestants leaked by Drag Race, the first being Season 2 of Drag Race UK.
- ... to be filmed and released during the COVID-19 pandemic, the first being Season 1 of Drag Race Holland.
- ... to not feature a mini challenge during the premiere.
- ... to feature the most looks in a single episode after Season 12, with 36 looks in episode 5.
- ...to include a mid-season special episode after Season 2 of Drag Race UK. Both specials are centered around the coronavirus pandemic.
- Season 13 is the third season...
- On Episode 1, it was revealed that Tamisha Iman was originally cast on Season 12 but had to forego the season due to her cancer diagnosis.
- It was later confirmed that she was replaced by Nicky Doll, who coincidentally, was also the 3rd contestant in her season to be sent home.
- Several Season 13 contestants are drag related to Drag Race alumni:
- Kahmora Hall is Soju's drag mother and the drag sister of Dida Ritz, Naysha Lopez, and Jaida Essence Hall.
- Kandy Muse is Aja's drag daughter and Dahlia Sin's drag sister.
- Rosé is Brita's drag sister & Jan and Lemon's drag aunt.
- Symone is Gigi Goode's drag sister.
- Coincidentally, Kahmora, Kandy, Rosé and Symone all had a sister competing on Season 12, which makes this the most pairs of drag relatives across two seasons, with four.
- Interestingly, Kandy, Rosé and Symone each also have a second sister who has not competed on Drag Race yet: Janelle No.5, Lagoona Bloo and Rosy Thorn respectively.
- Coincidentally, Kahmora, Kandy, Rosé and Symone all had a sister competing on Season 12, which makes this the most pairs of drag relatives across two seasons, with four.
- Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman of Canada's Drag Race made a cameo in episode 4, twice as a prince and once as a Prince impersonator in the three acting challenges.
- At the start of episode 4, the mirror reads "Bye Don", in reference to Donald Trump's term ending 2 days before the episode aired.
- Because of the Episode 1 Lip Sync Extravaganza, the following split premieres and a rather early double shantay, Season 13 is the Drag Race season where the episode with the same amount of competing contestants as there are episodes happens the latest, with a top nine in Episode 9. The previous record was held by Seasons 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12, with a top eight competing in Episode 8.
- The only other season where an amount of competing contestants matches the episode's number was Season 1, with the top five competing in Episode 5.
- Part of the fifth episode (the Mini Challenge segment) was filmed on July 30, 2020, on Elliott's birthday. [1]
- As revealed in the mid-season special episode, "Corona Can't Keep a Good Queen Down" ...
- ... filming began on July 20th, 2020.
- ... 2,591 Covid tests were administered.
